I was fortunate to get the opportunity to visit Antarctica in December of 1995. It is the world's last pristine wilderness and life in Antarctica must contend with one of the harshest environments on earth. It is virtually impossible to describe Antarctica. It is a land of extremes; the coldest, driest, windiest, as well as the highest continent in the world. Ninety-nine percent of Antarctica is covered by a permanent ice sheet, which averages over a mile in thickness and in some places almost three miles thick! It is here that we find the last relatively pristine ecosystem on earth.
